Chinese Academy of Science delegation visit IFAE

Gamma-ray GroupA delegation of the Chinese Academy of Science visited IFAE on Monday February 27 2023. The visit was part of a tour for reviewing the status of the collaborations with different European research institutions on space missions. IFAE has been participating in the design of the HERD cosmic-ray/gamma-ray detector for the China Space Station since 2020.
The delegation of the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) was led by Prof. Quanlin FAN (Deputy Director of the Center for Space Science Strategic Study and Project Review, National Space Science Center) and Prof. Shuangnan ZHANG (HERD PI and Director of the Division for Particle Astrophysics, IHEP, Beijing). Cristóbal Padilla made an institutional welcome, a presentation about IFAE and a tour to the Technical Division Building and facilities. Prof. ZHANG presented the status of the HERD project and HERD activities in China. Javier Rico presented a status of HERD activities at IFAE.
In March 1st, the CAS delegation, together with the PIs of the Spanish groups involved in HERD (including Javier Rico from IFAE) will meet Isabel Pérez Grande (AEI, Gestora del área de Investigación Espacial), Cecilia Hernández Rodríguez (CDTI, Delegada del Programa Científico en Misiones Espaciales) and Carlos Garcia Sacristan (CDTI, Delegado de Tecnología Espacial) in CDTI offices, Madrid.

HERD prototype tested at CERN SPS beam

The HERD prototype is being tested at CERN SPS beam between Oct 2 and 16. This test, together with the one at PS back in September, will be used to validate and optimize the different sub-detector concepts and complete Phase B of the project.
